Why it matters

Modern applications need layered defence

Your application estate extends beyond a website. APIs connect services, bots interact with customer journeys, and third-party scripts run in visitors’ browsers. Each creates a different path to data, accounts and business processes.

Application security brings these risks into one coordinated programme. Combine visibility, testing and secure development with controls that inspect production traffic, identify abuse and help maintain service availability. Prioritise protection around the transactions that matter most.

Outcomes

Outcomes that matter to the business

01

Reduce exploitation risk

Inspect application traffic and apply controls to suspicious requests and known attack patterns.

02

Protect digital journeys

Address account abuse, unwanted automation and threats to sensitive browser interactions.

03

Strengthen resilience

Prepare applications and response teams to handle disruptive traffic and changing attack behaviour.

Core capabilities

How Cybergen helps

Six connected areas, scoped to your organisation and delivered by people who understand the business context behind the controls.

01

Web application firewall

Inspect HTTP and HTTPS requests to help block injection, cross-site scripting and other application attacks. Tune policy to the application and use virtual patching where suitable while developers address underlying vulnerabilities.

02

API discovery and protection

Build visibility of exposed and undocumented endpoints. Review sensitive data flows, schemas and access patterns, then combine runtime detection with authentication, authorisation and API testing.

03

Advanced bot management

Assess automated traffic using behavioural and technical signals. Apply proportionate responses to scraping, credential attacks and transaction abuse while accommodating legitimate users and useful automation.

04

DDoS defence

Plan protection for application-layer disruption and assess network-layer needs separately. Combine appropriate mitigation, rate controls and origin protection with a tested escalation process.

05

Client-side protection

Understand the scripts active in sensitive browser journeys. Monitor unexpected changes and data destinations to help identify harmful third-party behaviour and potential browser-side data exposure.

06

Attack visibility and integration

Bring request events, policy decisions and attack trends into a usable operational view. Integrate appropriate alerts with your monitoring and response processes, with agreed ownership and escalation.

Coverage

What we help protect

Public applications

Bring consistent policy to customer portals, business websites and other internet-facing services.

APIs and integrations

Identify exposed endpoints and prioritise the services carrying sensitive data or enabling critical transactions.

Accounts and transactions

Address credential abuse, scraping and automated misuse in the context of the business process.

Cloud and hybrid estates

Assess controls across hosting environments, traffic routing and origins. Validate integration and deployment options against each application’s architecture.

Our approach

A clear path from first conversation to results

01
STEP 01

Map

Identify applications, APIs, origins, owners and critical journeys. Review existing controls and exposure.

02
STEP 02

Prioritise

Assess business impact and threat scenarios. Choose proportionate controls and agree responsibilities.

03
STEP 03

Tune and validate

Introduce policies in stages. Test legitimate transactions, attack scenarios and the response to service disruption.

04
STEP 04

Operate and refine

Review attack activity, false positives and application changes. Feed findings into engineering and incident response.

Business use cases

Built around how you work

Customer portals

Protect sign-in and account journeys with application controls, automation management and coordinated identity safeguards.

Digital commerce

Address unwanted scraping, automated purchasing and abuse of transaction flows while testing the impact on genuine customers.

Api-led services

Reduce blind spots around public and undocumented APIs. Review object-level authorisation and sensitive responses alongside runtime protection.

High-availability services

Prepare for disruptive traffic, confirm origin exposure and exercise escalation routes before an incident affects a critical service.

Illustrative scenarios

See how the controls make decisions

Choose an illustrative attack path to see the role of different controls. This demonstration uses fictional traffic and does not show live detections.

Injection attemptILLUSTRATIVE
A crafted request attempts to manipulate a database query through a public application.
SIGNALSuspicious request content
CONTEXT / CONTROLWeb application firewall
RESPONSEBlock and review

A matching WAF rule blocks the example request. The application owner checks whether the underlying code needs remediation and validates that legitimate requests still succeed.

Automated login abuseILLUSTRATIVE
Repeated login attempts target customer accounts using previously stolen credentials.
SIGNALAbnormal automated behaviour
CONTEXT / CONTROLBot and account abuse controls
RESPONSEChallenge or restrict

The example response applies a challenge or targeted restriction. Identity controls, multi-factor authentication and credential hygiene remain essential parts of account protection.

API authorisation abuseILLUSTRATIVE
An authenticated client requests records that appear unrelated to its expected access.
SIGNALUnusual resource access pattern
CONTEXT / CONTROLAPI monitoring and investigation
RESPONSEInvestigate and contain

Runtime monitoring highlights the example behaviour for review. Authorisation must still be enforced in the API; the response team validates the issue and coordinates containment with developers.

Application Security FAQ

Your questions, answered

Can't see your question? Ask our team.

What is web application and API protection?

Web application and API protection, often called WAAP, brings together capabilities such as a WAF, API protection, bot management and DDoS defence. The required combination depends on your estate and risk profile.

Is a WAF enough to secure an application?

No. A WAF provides a useful production control, but it does not replace secure design, access control, code review, dependency management or penetration testing. Business logic and authorisation flaws need additional assessment.

Can a WAF fix a vulnerability?

A suitable rule can reduce exposure to some attacks while a fix is developed. This is often called virtual patching. It does not remove the flaw from the application and needs testing, monitoring and eventual remediation.

How do you avoid blocking real customers?

Establish a baseline, test critical journeys and tune controls before enforcing them broadly. Use scoped exceptions and proportionate challenges, then review false positives as user behaviour and applications change.

Does API protection replace an API gateway?

No. Gateways manage routing and often authentication, quotas and policies. API security adds visibility and threat detection, while the application must correctly enforce permissions and business rules.

Does application security include testing?

A complete programme combines production protection with security testing and remediation. Agree the scope of application and API testing separately from traffic inspection and mitigation.

Will this make us compliant?

These controls can support security requirements and evidence gathering, including relevant payment and information security controls. Compliance depends on the full environment, processes and applicable assessment requirements.
