Find and fix the exposures attackers would actually use.
Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) is a five-stage programme, defined by Gartner, for continuously finding, prioritising, validating and fixing real-world exposures. Cybergen runs it for you, with Attack Surface Management at its core.
The five stages of a CTEM programme
A programme, not a product
Traditional security testing produces a long list of vulnerabilities at a single point in time. CTEM replaces that with a continuous cycle: agree what matters to the business, discover everything that is exposed, prioritise what attackers could really exploit, prove it with validation and get it fixed.
CTEM is the methodology. Attack Surface Management is the service that powers it, giving you a live view of your external and internal exposure that feeds every stage of the cycle.
By 2026, organisations prioritising their security investments based on a continuous exposure management programme will be three times less likely to suffer a breach.Gartner prediction
One continuous cycle. Five stages.

Agree what matters
Define the attack surface that matters most to the business, beyond just devices and IP ranges: critical services, data, SaaS, identities, suppliers and brand.
What Cybergen does
- Business-critical services and crown jewels
- External, internal, cloud and SaaS scopes
- Executive and brand exposure
- Success measures for the programme
Find everything exposed
Continuously discover assets and their exposures, including the ones nobody knew about: forgotten subdomains, shadow cloud, misconfigurations and leaked credentials.
What Cybergen does
- External attack surface discovery
- Cloud and SaaS misconfigurations
- Vulnerabilities and weak controls
- Leaked credentials and identity exposure
Focus on what attackers would use
Rank exposures by exploitability, threat intelligence, reachability and business impact, not just by severity scores.
What Cybergen does
- Known exploited vulnerabilities
- Threat actor relevance
- Attack path context
- Business impact weighting
Prove it, safely
Test whether priority exposures can really be exploited and whether your controls would prevent or detect the attack.
What Cybergen does
- Breach and attack simulation
- Attack path analysis
- Control effectiveness testing
- Targeted manual testing
Get it fixed
Turn findings into owned, tracked actions, agree acceptable risk with the business and report progress in language leaders understand.
What Cybergen does
- Owned remediation tickets
- Integration with IT workflows
- Exceptions and risk acceptance
- Board-level reporting
From thousands of findings to the few that matter
Teams cannot fix everything, and severity scores alone do not show what an attacker would use. CTEM combines exploitability, threat intelligence, attack path reachability and business impact to show where effort will genuinely reduce risk.
- Known exploited vulnerabilities and active campaigns
- Reachability from the internet or a compromised identity
- Impact on the services and data that matter most
See your organisation the way attackers do
Continuous discovery of internet-facing assets, cloud services and identities, so new exposures are found in days, not at the next annual test.
Domains, subdomains, IP ranges, certificates and exposed services.
Misconfigured storage, risky permissions and unsanctioned applications.
Leaked credentials, dormant accounts and risky privileges.
Lookalike domains and mentions of your organisation in criminal sources.
Illustrative findings
Prove the risk. Prove the fix.
Safe, continuous attack simulation shows which exposures can really be exploited and whether your controls would stop or spot the attack.
Beyond the annual test and the endless scan
Penetration testing and vulnerability scanning still matter. CTEM connects them into a continuous, risk-led programme.
| Annual penetration test | Vulnerability scanning | CTEM programme | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frequency | Once or twice a year | Weekly or monthly | Continuous |
| Coverage | Agreed scope only | Known assets | Known and unknown assets, cloud, SaaS and identity |
| Prioritisation | Tester judgement | Severity scores | Exploitability, threat and business impact |
| Proves exploitability | Yes, at a point in time | No | Yes, continuously |
| Tests your controls | Partly | No | Yes, with attack simulation |
| Drives remediation | Report | Ticket list | Owned actions, tracked to closure |
A rhythm your teams can keep up with
Cybergen runs the programme as a managed service, working alongside your IT and security teams.
Attack surface discovery and exposure monitoring
Prioritised exposure updates and new critical alerts
Remediation reviews with owners and risk decisions
Validation sprints, re-scoping and board reporting

What is Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM)?
CTEM is a five-stage programme, defined by Gartner, for continuously managing cyber exposure: scoping, discovery, prioritisation, validation and mobilisation. It focuses effort on the exposures attackers are most likely to use.
How is CTEM different from vulnerability management?
Vulnerability management finds and fixes software flaws. CTEM is broader: it covers misconfigurations, identities, cloud, SaaS and brand exposure, prioritises using exploitability and business impact, and validates findings with attack simulation.
What is Attack Surface Management?
Attack Surface Management continuously discovers and monitors your internet-facing assets, cloud services and identities. It is the service that feeds the discovery and prioritisation stages of a CTEM programme.
Does CTEM replace penetration testing?
No. CTEM uses penetration testing and attack simulation as part of validation. Manual testing remains valuable for depth and creativity, while CTEM provides continuous coverage between tests.
Is attack simulation safe to run in production?
Yes, when designed properly. Simulations use safe, controlled techniques agreed in advance and do not cause damage or disruption.
How long does it take to get started?
Scoping and initial discovery usually happen in the first few weeks, giving you a prioritised view of your most important exposures early in the programme.
